Researchers in England are warning of a new gene that can turn any bacteria into a “super bug“, rendering it impervious to most antibiotics. They also say the gene may soon begin rapidly spreading worldwide.
The gene was first discovered in hospitals in India and Pakistan, but cases have also been reported in Australia, the Netherlands, the United States — and Canada.
The new gene, called NDM-1, appears to be most commonly linked to the bacteria that cause urinary tract infections and some types of pneumonia. However, it can also impact other types of bacteria.
Dr. Larry Baddour, chair of the division of infectious disease at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn said that over 70 years of exposure to some of the same types of antibiotics has given bacteria the time to develop resistant genes. “The bacteria are getting smarter and smarter and their gaining mechanisms to get around the antibiotics,” said Baddour. “We need newer agents.”
Infectious disease specialist Dr. Neil Rau said the gene is not widespread in Canada, and cautioned that these so-called superbugs may not lead to debilitating disease.
“This word superbug is a bit of a dangerous moniker, it can be a rather frightening word for people,” Rau told News Channel. “It’s a superbug in the sense that it’s resistant to antibiotics, but it may not be more virulent and able to attack and cause infection than the standard strains.”
Rau said researchers have yet to determine the “survival advantage,” or fitness, of the gene to continue to churn out these superbugs. But he said should the gene continue circulating, it will likely have a greater impact in a hospital setting where “the standard antibiotic cocktails that we use today may not be effective three or five years from now. So the whole treatment paradigm or approach might be changed.”
It is our opinion here at Health Products Guru that this “treatment paradigm” must be changed now. Cases of H3N2, this years flu strain, have already been documented in various states over the summer, including two unrelated outbreaks in Iowa in a college team and at a day care center.
Today “West Nile Virus” was detected in East Knoxville with numerous reports of mosquitoes and birds found to be carrying the virus. As you know there is no cure for West Nile. The accepted treatment here is supportive care (rest and hydration).
So, here we are in August of 2010 and shipments of flu vaccinations are already traveling across the country and around the globe to deal with the up & coming flu season. We have two viruses migrating in our direction that are resistant to antibiotics and the bottom line here folks is that people are going to get sick. Those of you who have read our material in the past, especially that dealing with H1N1, know that we are far from alarmists. You also know that it has always been our contention that optimizing the immune system through nutrition is the best way to insure maximum protection against any disease. Thus far we have all been lucky. H1N1 did infect a great many people and thank God the mortality rate was low. Perhaps this NDM-1 “super bug” will be severe. Perhaps it will be no more dangerous than a common cold. Time will tell. That does not however mean that you should sit on the sidelines and wait to see what happens.
You should always be prepared for the worst by keeping your immune system functioning at optimum levels at all times.
