Do we have all of the information that we need to make informed decisions with regard to our personal health care and that of our loved ones?

One would think, with the advent of the Internet and the subsequent explosion of available information as the net has continues to grow, that people would be making better decisions in terms of their physical health.  The truth of the matter is that many people are suffering from information overload and are having a difficult time discerning good information from bad.

To further complicate matters a government advisory board (the US government), as reported by the NY Times on Wednesday (12/22/11), has asked scientific journals to cease reporting certain information regarding bio-medical experiments which they believe would aid terrorists in creating deadly viruses which could be used to touch off epidemics.

It seems that experiments conducted in the US and the Netherlands scientists have created a highly transmissible form of a deadly flu virus that does not normally spread from person to person.  This particular virus (H5N1) rarely infects human beings has an extraordinarily high death rate when it does.

This virus was first detected in 1997 of the some 600 people who have contracted it more than half have lost their lives due to the infection.  Nearly all have caught it from birds, and most cases have been in Asia. Scientists have watched the virus, worrying that if it developed the ability to spread easily from person to person, it could create one of the deadliest pandemics ever.

“A government advisory panel, the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity, overseen by the National Institutes of Health, has asked two journals, Science and Nature, to keep certain details out of reports that they intend to publish on the research. The panel said conclusions should be published, but not “experimental details and mutation data that would enable replication of the experiments.”  Reports the Times.

Bruce Alberts, the science editor of the publication, stated in his piece that although the NSAB cant force the publications to comply with their request, the well respected journal, Science & Nature, is seriously considering the recommendations of the panel and would more than likely withhold some information from the public in the name of national security.

Is this a form of censorship?  Might it do more harm than good?

Apparently these studies, one at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, and the other at the University of Wisconsin-Madison — were paid for by the National Institutes of Health.  Now the NIH is a government agency which is wholly supported by our tax dollars and is subsidized by the Department of Health and Human Services.

David R. Franz, a biologist who formerly headed the Army defensive biological lab at Fort Detrick, Md., is on the board and said its decision to intervene, made in the fall, was quite reasonable.
“My concern is that we don’t give amateurs — or terrorists — information that might let them do something that could really cause a lot a harm,” he said in an interview.   “It’s a wake-up call,” Dr. Franz added. “We need to make sure that our best and most responsible scientists have the information they need to prepare us for whatever we might face.”

Ronald M. Atlas, a microbiologist at the University of Louisville and past president of the American Society for Microbiology, who has advised the federal government on issues of germ terrorism, said the hard part of the recommendations would be creating a way to move forward in the research with a restricted set of responsible scientists.
He said that if researchers had a better understanding of how the virus works, they could develop better ways to treat and prevent illness. “That’s why the research is done,” he said.
The government, Dr. Atlas added, “is going to struggle with how to get the information out to the right people and still have a barrier” to wide sharing and inadvertently aiding a terrorist. “That’s going to be hard.”

Basically what we have here is the US Government sponsoring the creation of deadly viruses and then inhibiting the studies needed to prevent and treat the very illness that they themselves have created.  It seems that this H5N1 virus is the result of modifying the genetic sequencing of the H1N1 virus which caused the 1918 pandemic which killed up to 100 million people.

It is believed by many that the same such experiments, being carried out in Mexico by an American based company working on the development of a vaccine for the H1N1 virus, was the cause of the 2009 pandemic due to the virus not being contained within the confines of the laboratory.

Now I completely understand the need to protect our national security.  I also agree that if this information happened to fall into the wrong hands that is has the potential to cause devastating harm to our citizenry and people the world over.  I can even understand, to a point, the need to suppress such information.

What I don’t understand is why the government has taken an active roll in the creation of a new virus to begin with, using our tax dollars to do so, and then impede the scientific community from finding a remedy for the potential danger that they themselves have created.

The bottom line here is that no matter what the reasons the people are on the hook again.  Our very lives may hang in the balance.  We know that the mortality rate of the H1N1 virus has been very low since 2009.  Each year since then, at its seasonal apex, the mortality rate has been at a steady average of between 8% & 9% and the rate of infection has declined.

What we don’t know is what effect this H1N1 hybrid (H5N1), for lack of a better term, will have on our population if it ever does get out into the open.  This in my opinion is something to be very concerned about.

We know that H5N1 has a mortality rate of about 50% (6-7 times higher than H1N1)

We know that the scientific community doesn’t know how to kill the virus.

We know that one of the worlds leading authorities on the subject believes that this government intrusion may cause set backs in the discovery and development of a remedy for the virus and the subsequent infections caused by it.

We also know that certain information is more than likely going to be suppressed and hidden from the public.

How confident are you that the government and or the scientific community are working in your best interest?

Are you willing to put your trust in people who are in the business of creating deadly biological  organisms?

Are you ready to protect the lives of yourselves and your loved ones?

Ladies and gentlemen this article is not being written to put a scare into anyone.  It is a warning shot across your bow.  It is being written to get your attention.  I am not asking you to believe me.  In fact I encourage you to do your due diligence and discover the truth for yourselves.

Two years ago we wrote that the so called H1N1 pandemic was much to do about nothing.  Yes I know that some people did contract the virus and that some even died from it.  I wish with all of my heart that  this truth could be changed.  But it can’t.  The light at the end of the tunnel however is that the number of deaths ended up being a fraction of what the CDC and the WHO were claiming.  Thank God for that!

Last year I wrote an article which broached the idea that there was going to be a paradigm shift in the way conventional medicine was going to look at preventative medicine and that vaccinations were going to be the center piece of this shift.  What was written in this article has and is continuing to come to pass. In this article I am again sending out a warning to my readers.  Do all that you can do to optimize your body’s  immune system response as so as you can.  It is far better to be safe than sorry my friends.

Take the load off of your immune system!

Parents need to step up to the plate and intervene in the lives of their children or, as predicted over a decade ago, this generation will be the first not to out live their parents. “We are all born with ideal cardiovascular health, but right now we are looking at the loss of that health in youth,” said Donald Lloyd-Jones, M.D., chair and associate professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. “Their future is bleak.”

The study used measurements from the AHA’s 2020 Strategic Impact Goals for monitoring cardiovascular health in adolescents and children. Among the findings:

Very Poor Diets: All the 12-to-19-year-olds had terrible diets, which, surprisingly, were even worse than those of adults, Lloyd-Jones said. None of their diets met all five criteria for being healthy. Their diets were high in sodium and sugar-sweetened beverages and didn’t include enough fruits, vegetables, fiber or lean protein.

“They are eating too much pizza and not enough whole foods prepared inside the home, which is why their sodium is so high and fruit and vegetable content is so low,” Lloyd-Jones said.

High Blood Sugar: More than 30 percent of boys and more than 40 percent of girls have elevated blood sugar, putting them at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

Overweight or Obese: Thirty-five percent of boys and girls are overweight or obese. “These are startling rates of overweight and obesity, and we know it worsens with age,” Lloyd-Jones said. “They are off to a bad start.”

Low Physical Activity: Approximately 38 percent of girls had an ideal physical activity level compared to 52 percent of boys.

High Cholesterol: Girls’ cholesterol levels were worse than boys’. Only 65 percent of girls met the ideal level compared to 73 percent of boys.

Smoking: Almost 25 percent of teens had smoked within the past month of being surveyed.

Blood Pressure: Most boys and girls (92.9 percent and 93.4 percent, respectively) had an ideal level of blood pressure.

The problem won’t be easy to fix. “We are much more sedentary and get less physical activity in our daily lives,” Lloyd-Jones said. “We eat more processed food, and we get less sleep. It’s a cultural phenomenon, and the many pressures on our health are moving in a bad direction. This is a big societal problem we must address.”

It seems that in terms of preventive medicine, over the last few decades, there is a paradigm shift taking place within the conventional medical community. There are more and more vaccines being developed and entering the market place than ever before.

The question; is this a good thing or not?

I suppose the answer lies within our individual perceptions.

The whole idea behind vaccinations, as a therapy, is that when an antigen is introduced into the body it triggers an immune response which is then stored within our immune system’s memory banks (for lack of a better term) to prepare the body for a possible attack at a later time.

The question here is; do vaccinations actually achieve the intended results?

A study in the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) provides data on deaths from infectious diseases over the last century. When this data is juxtaposed (place or deal with close together for contrasting effect) with the introduction of vaccination programs for a variety of diseases, we see that most vaccines have had little to no effect, and some may even be harmful.

Results of the JAMA Study

With the exception of 1918, when the influenza epidemic struck, the rate of deaths from infectious diseases shows a fairly smooth rate of decrease from 1900 through 1980, at which point a slight rate of increase develops.

Deaths graphed by groups of diseases show some variations. The most significant improvements are in typhous and dysentery. Both of these diseases show almost no deaths after 1960. Significantly, there is no vaccination for dysentery and most people are not vaccinated for typhous.

Tuberculosis rates show a curve similar to the overall infectious disease rate. Interestingly, the death rate from pneumonia and influenza from 1970 through 1996 shows a general increase, in spite of the ongoing vaccinations for influenza and the introduction of pneumonia vaccines in 1977 and 1983.

As noted above, deaths from typhous and dysentery plunge to near-zero by 1960—though there is no vaccine for dysentery and passingly few people are vaccinated against typhous.

Diphtheria shows its greatest decrease of deaths prior to 1920. There was a spike in diphtheria deaths during the early 1920′s, shortly after the vaccination was introduced, and then the rate of decrease continued as before the vaccination’s introduction. Whooping cough (pertussis) and measles showed the same general trend of decrease during the 20th century.

Finally, take a look at the chart for death rates from all disease causes. From 1900 into the 1920s, the infectious disease rate goes down at an impressive pace. This is a time during which there were no vaccinations against childhood diseases. The decrease in the rate of deaths continues at about the same pace well into the 1950s. Then, it starts to level out, in spite of the fact that the vast majority of children are vaccinated during this time.

Now, take a look at the same graph showing the death rates from all diseases. This should make you nervous. The rate of death from noninfectious causes decreases slightly from 1900 through 1920. However, during the 1930s, when vaccinations start to be introduced, the death rate from noninfectious causes started to increase!

Our Conclusion:

For decades the conventional medical community, at large, has been touting the effectiveness of vaccinations in the prevention of disease.  Yet, as every single graph from JAMA’s own data base shows that these maladies were already on the decline some 30+ years before the introduction of these “life saving vaccines”!

It is more likely, in our opinion, that the decrease in the infection and mortality rate of these maladies can be attributed more to improvements in diet and sanitary conditions than the vaccination program instituted by the conventional medical community.

Our Recommendation:

If you are so inclined to “take the shot” do so.  We are not posting this article to discourage you from controlling your own personal health care.  Quite to the contrary.  We have provided you with this point of view to empower you to be able to make an informed decision based on all sides of the issue.

Are the claims that chocolate has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties true?

Does the world’s favorite treat really offer heart related benefits?

According to studies conducted by the British Medical Journal (BMJ):

Based on observational evidence, levels of chocolate consumption seem to be associated with a substantial reduction in the risk of cardiometabolic disorders. Further experimental studies are required to confirm a potentially beneficial effect of chocolate consumption.

Five of the seven studies reported a beneficial association between higher levels of chocolate consumption and the risk of cardiometabolic disorders. The highest levels of chocolate consumption were associated with a 37% reduction in cardiovascular disease (relative risk 0.63 (95% confidence interval 0.44 to 0.90)) and a 29% reduction in stroke compared with the lowest levels.

The researchers believe that the benefits of chocolate probably come from chocolate’s high polyphenol content. These antioxidant compounds can boost the body’s production of nitric oxide, which in turn helps reduce blood pressure.

Research shows that chocolate can provide natural health-promoting substances called flavonoids. Since flavonoids seem to help prevent heart disease and cancer, the idea of eating chocolate sounds like a tempting and delicious way to better your health. The complete message is, however, that although chocolate might be preferable to other treats, it is no substitute for vegetables and fruits, which also contain flavonoids.

The flavonoids in chocolate that laboratory studies demonstrate to have powerful antioxidant effects are called flavanols and procyanidins. These two compounds come from the flavonoid “family” that includes resveratrol, found in grape juice, and EGCG, found in green tea. When people consume these substances in chocolate and cocoa, the antioxidant status of their blood increases.

This rise in antioxidant levels helps protect us from damage to the heart and blood vessels, while it also guards our DNA from damage that can lead to cancer.

In addition, the flavanols and procyanidins in chocolate improve the function and flow of blood vessels and help control inflammation.

The antioxidants in chocolate have generated a lot of interest because studies show that these compounds are more powerful antioxidants than EGCG in tea, which is a strong antioxidant.

In another study conducted by Mary Engler, PhD, RN, of the University of California, San Francisco, (and colleagues) Dr. Engler states:

“This is the longest clinical trial to date to show improvement in blood vessel function from consuming flavonoid-rich dark chocolate daily over an extended period of time,” Engler says in a news release. “It is likely that the elevated blood levels of epicatechin triggered the release of active substances that … increase blood flow in the artery. IMPORTANT

Not all chocolate is created equal.

Dark chocolate contains a lot more cocoa than other forms of chocolate. And standard chocolate manufacturing destroys up to half of the flavoniods.

These reports are not stating that eating a Dove or Hershey chocolate bar will improve your health. What they are stating however is that consuming a cocoa product manufactured in a way that the flavoniods are preserved can offer cardiovascular benefits to the consumer. Lexington has not had any WNV-positive mosquitoes or human cases so far this season, according to the Health Division.

Statewide last year, 3,558 mosquito samples were tested for WNV and, as a result, only 121 samples were positive. WNV is most commonly transmitted to humans by the bite of a mosquito infected with the virus. While WNV can infect people of all ages, people over the age of 50 are at higher risk for severe infection.

Culex mosquitoes are the primary vectors of WNV, which is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. The mosquitoes that carry this virus are common throughout the state, and are found in urban as well as more rural areas.While most mosquito species develop in wetlands, Culex mosquitoes prefer to lay their eggs in catch basins, clogged rain gutters, unused tires, buckets and other water-holding containers.

Residents have an important role to play in reducing the risk of WNV and protecting themselves and their loved ones by taking a few, common-sense precautions. Because of the role of Culex mosquitoes transmitting West Nile Virus, residents can help combat this disease by mosquito proofing their property.

–Limit the number of places around your home for mosquitoes to develop by either draining or getting rid of items that hold water.

–Check rain gutters and drains, as well as empty any unused flowerpots and wading pools, and change water in birdbaths frequently.

–Install or Repair Screens. Some mosquitoes like to come indoors. Keep them outside by having tightly fitting screens on all of your windows and doors.

You may also avoid mosquito bites by following these simple steps:

– Be Aware of Peak Mosquito Hours – The hours from dusk to dawn are peak biting times for many mosquitoes. Consider re-scheduling outdoor activities that occur during evening or early morning. Otherwise, take extra care to use repellent and protective clothing.

–Clothing can help reduce mosquito bites. Although it may be difficult to do when it’s hot, wearing long-sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors will help keep mosquitoes away from your skin.

–Apply Insect Repellent when you go outdoors. Use a repellent with DEET, permethrin, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus, according to the instructions on the product label. DEET products should not be used on infants under two months of age and should be used in concentrations of 30 percent or less on older children. Oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on children under three years of age.  Permethrin products are intended for use on items such as clothing, shoes, bed nets and camping gear and should not be applied to skin.

Over the next few weeks, the Lexington Health Division will continue to work with the Mass DPH and the Eastern Middlesex Mosquito Control Project to monitor the mosquito populations for WNV.

So far this year, 183 acres of wetlands have been treated by helicopter application of Bti granules. Both of the people in Fresno County were ill enough to be hospitalized and one remained in the hospital today, a county health official said. In Tulare, one man required hospital care and also remained in the hospital.

The Fresno and Tulare county cases are among six West Nile cases statewide confirmed this week, and among seven so far this year in the state. According to the state Department of Public Health, two people from Stanislaus County also were infected this week. And an infection in Santa Barbara County was reported earlier.

In 2010, Fresno County reported 23 people with West Nile infections and one virus-related death. Tulare County had 12 cases and no deaths. Madera County had seven cases and two people died. Kings County had one case and no deaths.

“We’ve averaged at least one death for the last six years,” said David Luchini, manager of the communicable disease division at the Fresno County Department of Public Health.

For years we’ve been told that caffeinated coffee was bad for us. It’s unhealthy and addictive, doctors warned. But as vindication for all who stuck by their energizing elixir, a new study shows that guzzling caffeinated coffee may actually be good for our brains. In fact, it may help keep Alzheimer’s at bay.

The study, which was published early online in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, was in mice whose DNA had been tweaked to contain a human Alzheimer’s gene. Just like humans with familial Alzheimer’s, these mice become increasingly forgetful as they age.

Amazingly, the equivalent of four to five cups of caffeinated coffee every few days led to much improved memories in the Alzheimer’s mice, says study co-author Gary Arendash, a scientist at the Florida Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center in Tampa.

Earlier research by Arendash and his colleagues showed that caffeine could at least partially block the production of beta amyloid, the sticky protein that clogs the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. They also found that a substance called granulocyte-colony stimulating factor, or GCSF, sparked the production of new axons, the communication cables that link nerve cells together, as well as new nerve cells themselves.

What’s really interesting is that caffeinated coffee — but not decaf — boosted the production of GCSF.

For the new study, Arendash and his colleagues “treated” healthy mice and Alzheimer’s mice with either caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee. Then the researchers ran a test to see if either beverage led to better memories.

The test they used mimics one that is given to humans to diagnose Alzheimer’s. In that test, people are given a bag of objects to look through (we’ll call that Bag A). And then they’re shown another bag of objects (Bag B). Later on, they’re asked to remember what was in Bag A.

Studies have shown that people with Alzheimer’s have a tough time remembering what was in Bag A because the distraction of looking through the objects from Bag B gets in the way of storing the contents of A in their long term memories. That’s generally not a problem for people with healthy brains.

The two part mouse test involved water mazes. The mice has to find — and remember — the location of a submerged platform in a tub of water that is deep enough that they need to swim till they find the platform.

After they find the platform in one tub, they’re moved to another tub where they have to find yet another platform. Mice with Alzheimer’s generally have a tough time remembering the location of the first platform when they’re placed in the original tub. But in Arendash’s study, Alzheimer’s mice that got caffeinated coffee had memories that were just as good as those of normal mice.

Lest you dismiss this study because it’s just in rodents, Arendash says he’s got new data in humans. That data is still being analyzed, he says, but so far it looks like caffeinated coffee has the same impact in people as it does in mice.
