AUSTRALIAN SCIENTISTS IN SWINE FLU BREAKTHROUGH

Seaweed Derivative Shown to Inhibit H1N1 Virus

In a breakthrough that offers new hope for the containment of influenza outbreaks, an Australian biotechnology company has isolated a natural extract from seaweed which has been shown to inhibit the H1N1 virus.

The extract – known as Maritech® 926 – is a fucoidan compound derived from the Undaria pinnatifida species of seaweed. In vitro tests performed under contract by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the US, have shown that Maritech® 926 can inhibit the H1N1 influenza virus at extremely low concentrations.

Developed by biotechnology company Marinova Pty Ltd, Maritech® 926 is a natural polysaccharide which has immediate market potential in nutritional supplements, hand washes and nasal delivery products which target the spread and prevention of viral conditions. Scope also exists for the compound to be included in pharmaceutical and medical device applications. As a result of these findings, Marinova has filed for patent protection over the application of Maritech® 926 and other fucoidan extracts in a range of anti-viral applications.

In announcing the findings and patent filing, Marinova’s Senior Scientist, Dr Helen Fitton, said:

“Fucoidan extracts such as Maritech® 926 are known to have significant inhibitory effects on a range of coated viruses. We are particularly excited by the fact that these seaweed extracts have now been shown to have an inhibitory effect on H1N1 at extremely low concentrations. With H1N1 already becoming resistant to some other antiviral agents, we believe that Maritech® 926 offers a potent, natural alternative which supports the immune system against viral attacks”.

The Japanese seaweed Undaria arrived in Tasmania in ballast water more than 20 years ago.

A compound in the seaweed acts as a natural defense against marine viruses and toxins.

Scientists at a private laboratory near Hobart are convinced it is just as effective on humans.

They have tested the compound against several viruses and say it profoundly inhibits the H1N1 virus.

Researcher Dr Helen Fitton says viruses use receptors to get into cells, but this process is stopped in the presence of the seaweed compound.

“The virus is unable to use its receptor to get into the cell,” she said.

Marinova Laboratories CEO Paul Garrott says he is anticipating immediate commercial interest and expects the compound will be used in nasal sprays, hand washes and tablets.

“This whole class of fucoidan compounds have been shown to have very profound antiviral activities against a range of influenza strains, against a range of other viruses and coated viruses – we mentioned HIV, we mentioned the herpes simplex virus.”

The FDA stated that giving animals antibiotics to increase food production should be stopped because is a threat to human health.  In the hope that the food industry will make voluntary changes the FDA has made the decision to stand on the sidelines for the time being even though they have the power to ban the practice.

Like humans, animals sometimes need antibiotics to fight or prevent specific infections.  Food producers however  give antibiotics to animals regularly because it makes them gain more weight from the foods that they eat faster than without the additives.

“We are seeing the emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens,” FDA Deputy Commissioner Joshua Sharfstein, MD, said at a news conference.   The FDA believes that the overall weight of evidence supports the conclusion that using medically important antimicrobial drugs for production purposes is not appropriate.”  Sharfstein said it’s a public health issue when antibiotics important for human health are given to animals on a massive scale. Such use encourages the growth of drug-resistant bacteria that can cause hard-to-treat human disease.  Sharfstein  also said antibiotics should be used only to protect the health of an animal and not to help it grow or improve the way it digests its feed. “This is an urgent public health issue,” Sharfstein said during a conference call with reporters. “To preserve the effectiveness [of antibiotics], we simply must use them as judiciously as possible.”

It is rare indeed where I find myself in a position to defend the FDA however they have tried to limit the use of antibiotics in agriculture since 1977, but its efforts have repeatedly collapsed in the face of opposition from the drug industry and farm lobby.   But mounting evidence of a global crisis of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has propelled the government to act, said Brad Spellberg, an infectious-diseases specialist and the author of “Rising Plague,” a book about antibiotic resistance.

“The writing is on the wall,” said Spellberg, who teaches at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. “We’re in an era where antibiotic resistance is out of control, and we’re running out of drugs and new drugs are not being developed. We can’t continue along the path we’re on.”

The European Union banned the feeding of antibiotics and related drugs to livestock for growth promotion in 2006.

U.S. farmers routinely give antibiotics to food-producing animals to treat illnesses, prevent infection and encourage growth. The drugs are often added to drinking water and feed. The Union of Concerned Scientists estimates that 70 percent of antibiotics and related drugs used in the United States are given to animals.  Many of the same classes of drugs fed to animals are deemed “critically” important in human medicine by the FDA, including penicillin, tetracyclines and sulfonamides. In recent years, public health experts say there has been an alarming increase in the number of bacteria that have grown resistant to antibiotics, leading to severe, untreatable illnesses in humans.

Naturally the farming industry, food producers and the manufacturers of the drugs being used are stating that there is not enough evidence for the FDA to propose an alternative course of action and that they need more evidence before it dictates changes to long-standing practices of administering antibiotics to animals.
“Show us the science that use of antibiotics in animal production is causing this antibiotic resistance,” said Dave Warner of the pork council. “How do we know [the problem] is not on the human side? Where is the science for you to go forward on this?”

Conversely public health groups, however, said the agency’s actions were too tentative.

“The policy is good, but you can’t have a policy unless you have a mechanism to implement,” said Steve Roach of Keep Antibiotics Working, a coalition of health and environmental groups. “Their hope is the industry is voluntarily going to go along. We don’t believe people are going to act against their own economic interest because FDA asks them politely to do it.”

Rep. Louise M. Slaughter (D-N.Y.), who has filed legislation to limit the use of antibiotics in agriculture, said FDA officials “have not gone far enough or moved fast enough.”   “Scientists and public health experts have known for many years that these drugs were being overused by farmers,” she said.
In the mean time the consumer once again finds themselves caught in the middle of this game of Russian Roulette.

They say the health claims of Mead Johnson’s Enfagrow Premium — a “toddler formula” for children 12 to 36 months old — are unproven. The products contain more than 25 additives to boost growth, brain development and immunity for the kids, but some say the dollops of added sugar for flavoring may contribute to the childhood obesity epidemic.

The company responded to the firestorm of criticism by dropping its new chocolate-flavored product, which critics have considered the worst offender with 19 grams of sugar.

The chocolate version was discontinued after four months because of “the whole emotional evocative nature of chocolate,” said Mead Johnson spokesman Chris Perille. “It’s more associated with candy and sweets and things potentially not as beneficial. Flavor was more in conflict with a nutritious product.”

In a prepared statement Wednesday, Mead Johnson said there had been “some misunderstanding and mischaracterization regarding the intended consumer” of the product. “The resulting debate has distracted attention from the overall benefits of the brand.”

But the company still intends to sell its vanilla-flavored Enfagrow, which has 16 to 17 grams of sugar overall, and three other unflavored versions with 10 to 11 grams, targeting so-called “picky eaters” who could use a nutritional supplement.

The company introduced an unflavored product, “Next Step,” in 1994. Later it was rebranded as Enfagrow. Last July the company launched its vanilla flavor and chocolate was added in February, according to Perille.

Mead Johnson sells all these products as “science-based” and is marketing Enfagrow for children ages 1 to 3, who have been weaned off breast milk or infant formula and “still need nutritional support.”

Its main ingredients are, in this order: whole milk, nonfat milk and sugar. Product labeling indicates the formula is fortified with vitamins “for healthy growth;” Omega-3 DHA and iron, “building blocks of the brain;” and prebiotics and antioxidants to “support the immune system.”

It’s not cheap: $18.99 for 29 ounces. The can makes 22 servings (one-quarter cup of powder mixed with six ounces water) — about 86 cents for a glass of fortified milk, sugar and flavoring.

In its advertising, the company notes that “85 percent of brain growth” happens before age 3. The poster child for the advertising, a chunky toddler in red Converses, seems to echo that claim as he points to a nutritional list with a saw cutting a log over his head.

“It’s got three health claims and if somebody looks at it, they’ll think, ‘Oh if I feed my child this product he will be smart, immune and grow. My kid is a picky eater, he’ll love this,’” said Marion Nestle, professor of food studies and public health at New York University, who has launched a campaign to get the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to stop Mead Johnson’s health claims.

“This is a completely unnecessary product,” she said. “It’s expensive and the first two ingredients are milk and the third is sugar. They could just add a teaspoon of sugar to the milk and get the same thing.”

There seems to be a growing segment of the scientific community that believes there is soon to be a paradigm shift in terms of the treatment of disease.  Simply Stated the new paradigm is that people need to take drugs before they get sick, as a preventive measure, rather than turning to drugs only after they have already become ill.

As we all know the concept of prevention in terms of health care is nothing new.  Many people within the alternative medical community have been touting the benefits of a more proactive approach to health care for decades.   The problem here is not so much in the objective of achieving and maintaining good health rather in the path that we take to reach that end.  While the conventional medical community tends to take the approach of treating disease with the use of pharmaceutical drugs the alternative medical community has ALWAYS been on the forefront of the concept of an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure and that these cures can be found in nature rather than in a laboratory .

Today, in it’s infinite wisdom, conventional medicine has apparently discovered that prevention is the most logical approach to good health and is actively seeking a way to become more proactive in it‘s roll to provide preventive healthcare to the masses.  Although this philosophical shift is definitely welcome and long overdue in our society the problem, as usual, is found in the course of treatment rather than in the objective.   We believe that in the natural course of events western medicine will develop a whole new class of drugs (preventive pharmaceuticals) and eventually some form of mandatory inoculation program liken to the one currently imposed on our infants and children.

Setting aside the monetary and social tenets of this philosophy, for the time being anyway, I’d like to take a little time to explore the therapeutic value of vaccination.

According to medicine net.com:

Vaccination is the injection of a killed microbe in order to stimulate the immune system against the microbe, thereby preventing disease. Vaccinations, or immunizations, work by stimulating the immune system, the natural disease-fighting system of the body. The healthy immune system is able to recognize invading bacteria and viruses and produce substances (antibodies) to destroy or disable them. Immunizations prepare the immune system to ward off a disease. To immunize against viral diseases, the virus used in the vaccine has been weakened or killed. To only immunize against bacterial diseases, it is generally possible to use a small portion of the dead bacteria to stimulate the formation of antibodies against the whole bacteria. On the surface this seems to be a logical approach to the problem of combating disease.  As we dig a little deeper however we discover a few major flaws in the concept which raise a few obvious questions.

Do vaccines actually work?

Many proponents of vaccination point to the decline in the mortality rate since the turn of the 20th century as evidence that immunization by vaccination is effective in preventing disease.  We do not believe this to be true.  First and foremost we believe that this increase in our life span is attributed to better sanitary conditions as well as advancements in nutritional science.  Sickness and death historically were caused mostly by poor nutrition, inadequate housing, unsanitary living conditions, poverty, warfare and as population density and urbanization grew exposure to bacteria, parasites, and communicable diseases followed suit.  These conditions gave rise to acute illnesses such as influenza, scarlet fever, whooping cough, polio, pneumonia, and tuberculosis to name a few. In most cases, acute illnesses occur suddenly and are characterized by a sharp increase in discomfort and pain due to an inflammation, and are of short duration. Whether endemic or epidemic, these illnesses contributed heavily to the high mortality rates and short life spans among persons living in pre-industrial societies.

Are vaccines safe?

The value of vaccination, as with many things in life, can be determined in terms of risk verses reward.  The primary health risk associated with immunization by vaccination has always been contamination of the serums by harmful bacteria.  As a solution to this problem antibacterial agents were introduced to the products.  One such agent called thermisol (thimerosal, thiomersal, thiomersalate), also known as Merthiolate, is a mercury containing agent used as a preservative in pharmaceutical preparations.  As you probably know there is an ongoing debate within the medical community as to the safety of this agent.  It is believed by many that the use of this agent is directly connected with the rise of the Autism rate in the US and world wide.

There are many who believe that antivaccinist leadership are simply countercultural types who view life through a prism of conspiracy theories (the government lies, the drug companies are evil, the medical profession is corrupt;).  Perhaps to some greater or lesser degree the vaccinists are right.  There are many who see conspiracy around every corner.  Be that as it may I do not believe this to be the case in this situation.  There is a mountain of evidence that shows there has been and continues to be a massive cover up regarding the connection between thimerosal and autism.  This evidence will be reveled in depth  in a future article “Our Children Under Attack”.

The final and perhaps the most important question is; should we have the personal choice as to weather we and or our loved ones opt out of any immunization program?  Obviously we believe that as Americans and as consumers, do indeed have that right.

In closing ladies and gentlemen I’d like to say that this article is meant to serve as a warning.  The idea of imposed adult vaccination is not as far fetched or futuristic as you might think.  The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation  in 2008 has allotted a $100,000 grant to an Japanese research team working on genetically engineered mosquitoes to deliver vaccines.  Edible vaccines, as GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) foods, are in the future as well. Meat and Poultry, a business journal for meat and poultry processors, reports in a May 5, 2009 article , by Bryan Salvage, that researchers at Iowa State University are working on creating a method to install vaccines into corn crops.

“We’re trying to figure out which genes from the swine influenza virus to incorporate into corn”, stated Hank Harris, a researcher on the project. “If a swine flu virus breaks out, the corn could be shipped to the location to try to vaccinate animals and humans in the area quickly. . . . there is no need for extensive vaccine purification, which can be an expensive process.”

This way even corn products, including corn chips and corn syrup, which is ubiquitous in processed foods, can serve as vaccination vehicles for humans while the corn itself is fed to hogs. Starting in 1996, bananas have been considered as a vaccination vehicle for developing countries. Keep in mind that this will be genetically engineered, or GMO so you won’t know where and when it will show up on the food shelves.

Most vaccination serums are created by using fragments of dead micro-organisms to trigger an immune system response to the invading organism.

The H1N1 nasal mist however is a “live vaccine” (contains the live H1N1 micro-organism).

**If you plan on taking the H1N1 vaccine  please note that women who are pregnant or patients with specific conditions — like asthma or immuno suppression  should not use the nasal form of vaccine due to  added risks posed by the live-virus vaccine.**

As those of you who have been reading my articles may have noted I have been quite suspect about this entire H1N1 (swine flu virus) scare for quite some time.  The release of this “live vaccine”  simply adds more fuel to that fire.  We know that the H1N1 virus has, as predicted, began to spread again.  We also know that pregnant women and the elderly were supposed to be the first to receive the “inject able” vaccine because they are among the “high risk“ groups.   Don’t you find it suspicious that the first shipments of the vaccine are not to be used by the “high risk” groups?

For whom are the intranasal vaccines deemed “safe” for use?  Children!  Now I’d like you to think about this for a moment.  Stated on the insert that comes with the vaccine the product has the potential for transmission to others.  So if a child gets the Flumist in school they are contagious to the other children for at least two weeks.  Is this going to help to contain the virus or help to spread it?  Are you going to let some doctor give your child the live virus?  More importantly are you going to permit your child come in contact with another child who received the intranasal vaccine?

Ladies and Gentlemen the bottom line is that this vaccine, in either form, has been fast tracked with very few studies.  The studies done, however, have been completed without the added thimerosal (mercury) and squalene. The vaccines for the general public, when they are ready, will be formulated with squalene (a possible cause of Gulf War Syndrome) and thimerosal, a known neurotoxin. Very few vaccines without these additives will be available.

Also, 90 percent of the seasonal flu vaccines contain thimerosal.

I’m not trying to frighten anyone here I am simply offering information that might be of interest and or of benefit to my readers.  Much of the information I have seen indicates that the virus has not began to mutate and that the mortality rate is relatively low (especially if you are not in a high risk group).  The question you must ask yourselves is: do the benefits outweigh the risks involved with inoculation?  Don’t take my word for anything here however I strongly advise that you do your due diligence before you make your decision.

Again, in closing, I will state my position that the best offense is a strong defense.  Do all that you can to boost your immune system now and allow your body do what it has been designed to do.

I’d like to take another path in broaching these issues here if I may.  As I have previously stated I believe that these vaccines are dangerous and should be avoided at all costs.  Again, this is my personal opinion and I do not advise others to take the same path that I have chosen.  I am simply providing you with information that can help you to make the best decisions concerning your health and the health of your families and friends.

Having said that I’d like to take a little time here to offer you some food for thought about vaccinations in general.

Are you beginning to get the picture here?  These people are recognized as leaders in their area of expertise who all agree that immunization is not only useless it has actually exacerbated many of the health issues confronting us today.

Greg Bettie, author of; Vaccination a Parents Dilemma, shows that the death rate due to infectious diseases in Australia ( Whooping Cough, Diphtheria, Measles and Polio to name a few) were already, dramatically, on the decline by the time vaccinations were given and that these serums had nothing to do with the reduction of the morbidity rate.

Dr Henry Bieler, author of ‘Food is Your Best Medicine’ writes, “The primary cause of disease is not germs. Disease is caused by a toxaemia which results in cellular impairment and breakdown, thus paving the way for the multiplication and onslaught of germs”.

The causes of toxaemia are numerous. In third world countries the causes are related primarily to malnourishment, impure water, poor sanitation, poverty and overcrowding. In the developed countries like USA, Australia, England etc the causes are more related to over consumption of animal, dairy and refined processed foods, particularly cereals and grains, chemical additives in food and water, drugs, vaccines, pesticide residues and industrial poisons. Other causes can include poor parental health, traumatic childbirth, impoverished or polluted breast milk, too early introduction of solid foods, spinal misalignment, muscular spasm, and nutritional deficiency.

This is why I believe so strongly that vaccines are at least totally ineffective and at best a clear and present danger to our health.  Studies have shown that this is especially true in the case of children. Vaccines contain not only poisonous chemicals, such as formaldehyde which is commonly used to embalm corpses and is a known carcinogen, thiomersal, a derivative of mercury which is a toxic heavy metal and aluminum phosphate which is a toxin used in deodorants (to name a few) but also foreign proteins such as chick embryo, calf serum, rabbit brain tissue and monkey kidney cells. These foreign proteins can trigger numerous allergic and inflammatory reactions and can produce anaphylactic shock in susceptible infants.

In many children, the retention of vaccine poisons within the body may not cause any acute or noticeable symptoms, but it will cause a lowering of the child’s vitality, which in turn, weakens and impairs it’s intellectual, creative and imaginative powers, it’s physical energy and strength, and all of its internal metabolic functions and immune activities. What this means is that the child will operate at a level well below its true potential.

The toxic build-up within the child’s body and the subsequent depletion of its vitality through vaccines, drugs, fluoridated water, food additives, pesticide residues, atmospheric pollutants, electromagnetic radiation and other adverse factors in the lifestyle makes the child more susceptible to chronic disease at an earlier age, and it’s worth noting that the dramatic rise in childhood cancer, autism, juvenile diabetes, asthma and neurological disorders over the past fifty years, has directly coincided with the era of drugs, vaccines and chemical poisons in our food, water and environment.

Why do vaccinations continue if they have no benefit or more importantly are dangerous?  We will be discussing this question in a later article.

In the mean time I’d like you to keep this in mind.  There is a beneficial nature to childhood infection.  Let’s take a look at some of the symptoms associated with illness and how they actually benefit the body.

Fever – speeds up bodily elimination of toxic waste.

No Appetite – when a fever is present, the digestive system shuts down thus removing the need and desire for food.

Vomiting/Diarrhea – the body’s way of eliminating undigested foodstuff from the digestive tract.

Tiredness/Lethargy – the body’s way of forcing a sick person to rest thus conserving its energy for the vital tasks of cleansing and repair.

Glandular Swelling - the lymph glands filter the blood for toxic substances. Swelling of these glands greatly increases their filtering capacity.

Skin Rash - represents an elimination of toxic waste, the skin being a major eliminative organ.

Mucus Elimination – also an elimination of toxic waste. Mucus is made up of the body’s white blood cells which are the body’s garbage cans containing toxic residue. A good example is the runny nose.

Inflammation – serves the same purpose as fever, to cleanse and repair damaged or poisoned tissue in the body.

Now I’m not saying that we want our children to become ill.  What I am suggesting however is that the presence of these symptoms are not necessarily a bad thing.  They show that the body is functioning properly and is trying to rid itself of the malady that is effecting it.

Again I say in closing that the best defense Is a strong offence.  Do not wait until you or a loved one become ill to take action.  Be proactive not reactive.  Eat properly, supplement your diet with natural vitamins and minerals and keep your immune system strong.

Parents talking on the internet forums have expressed some concern about the H1N1 vaccine that will be offered to children and adults with underlying health conditions and pregnant women as priorities.
Fears raised include its safety for pregnant women, whether the vaccine has been tested enough and the fact one of them contains a controversial mercury preservative.

HEALTH officials have warned doctors of possible similarities between the new swine flu vaccine and a jab linked to 25 deaths in America in the 1970s.  The government’s Health Protection Agency (HPA), said in a letter to neurologists that they needed to look out for increases in cases of a brain disorder that might follow the launch of the immunization program.  In 1976, Washington rushed in a mass immunization program against a swine flu outbreak that was confined to a single military base.  Several hundred cases of a rare, lethal, paralyzing neurological disease called Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) were reported afterwards, and although no clear link was ever found to the vaccine, the incident made many people mistrustful of immunizations.

The Department of Health said: “Appropriate trials to assess safety and immune responses have been carried out on vaccines very similar to the swine flu vaccine. The vaccines have been shown to have a good safety profile.”

The World Health Organization has also said recently that the public should be “reassured” about the safety of the new vaccine. It acknowledged that “genuine adverse events directly caused by the vaccine may also occur, but cannot be predicted in advance”.

What’s going on here?  Which side of the isle is right and what are we to do in the face of conflicting opinion?  I wish I had the answer.  What I do know is that according to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius a new swine flu vaccine to be available for distribution by mid-October — fully six to seven weeks after American schoolchildren will have flocked back to the germ pools of their classrooms. Sebelius hasn’t formally approved a nationwide vaccination campaign, which would detail which populations should get priority in the use of still-scarce vaccine. But she’s expected to do so soon.

In the mean time five medical centers across the country will begin testing the H1N1 vaccine tomorrow (Wednesday – Aug.18 2008).  I am shocked and bewildered that Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. expects to enroll 160 children who, with parental consent, will become human guinea pigs to test this serum.  The study is designed to determine the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine in children 6 months to 17 years old.  Each child will receive two doses of the vaccine against the H1N1 virus.  A second study is to begin next week on another group of children at other medical centers across the country including St. Louis University.

What if I get swine flu?

You can’t know for sure if you have the new H1N1 flu unless you get a test. But rapid flu tests haven’t proven reliable at pinpointing cases of the new disease; only a lab test can confirm whether you have it.
Treatment is similar to that for seasonal flu.  Most people get well by resting, staying hydrated and taking medicines to reduce fever. Stay home and keep your distance from others for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone.

Children under 18 years old shouldn’t be given aspirin due to a risk of Reye’s Syndrome, a rare but potentially life-threatening illness. Don’t give cold medicines to children under four without first talking with a pediatrician.

You should call the doctor if you have trouble breathing, chest or abdominal pain, dizziness, confusion or persistent vomiting, or if your flu symptoms worsen after improving, the CDC says. Call the pediatrician if your child has those symptoms, isn’t drinking enough fluids, or is irritable or sluggish.

Do not Panic!

I have said it before and I will state it again.  Hundreds of millions of people lose their lives to the seasonal flu every year.  I know that every life is very important and I honestly wish that this statistic was not true.  Sadly enough however it is true and in our faces every year.  It is also true that only a small fraction of the world population have been effected by the H1N1 virus and subsequently an even smaller number of people have succumb to it’s effects.

More than two million people are believed to have contracted the new flu in the U.S.; 7,511 had been hospitalized and 477 had died as of Aug. 13, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. World-wide, 177,457 people have been confirmed with the disease, and 1,462 deaths had been reported as of Aug. 12, according to the World Health Organization.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) pregnant women and people with asthma, diabetes, heart disease and other chronic diseases. About 70% of those hospitalized and about 80% of those who have died in the U.S. had underlying medical conditions, according to the CDC. In a study published in the Lancet, CDC scientists found pregnant women were more than four times as likely to be hospitalized with the new flu than the general population.

It isn’t clear whether obesity itself is a risk factor. Morbidly obese patients have had greater complications, but it may be due to diabetes or other chronic diseases they have, health officials say.

Public health officials initially feared a deadly scourge, after reports of dozens of deaths in Mexico. Instead, “what we are seeing looks very much like seasonal flu so far,” Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said earlier this month. Most people suffer unpleasant but not life-threatening symptoms, such as fever, body aches, sore throat and runny nose. Gastrointestinal problems—vomiting and diarrhea—are normally rare for adults with flu, but have been reported globally in as many as 50% of nonhospitalized patients with the virus.

Many people don’t even develop a fever, though they had other symptoms, says Richard Wenzel, chairman of the department of internal medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Medical College, who observed such cases on trips to Latin America. One academic hospital in Chile told Dr. Wenzel that only half of its outpatients infected with H1N1 swine flu had fever; some had only a runny nose, sometimes with a headache, he says.

One unusual thing: Young people are getting sick, while the elderly, who normally account for 90% of annual deaths from flu, have largely been spared. Most of those who died—generally of viral pneumonia and other complications—have ranged from 25 through 64 years old, according to a CDC analysis. CDC officials say people 60 and older may have some immunity to the new virus from exposure to H1N1 viruses that circulated between 1918 and 1957.

If you do opt to take your chances with the new vaccine be sure to tell your doctor that you want the thimerosal-free vaccine .  For those of you who don’t know, Thimerosal is a mercury-containing organic compound widely used as a preservative in a number of biological and drug products, including many vaccines, to help prevent potentially life threatening contamination with harmful microbes.  Over the past several years, because of an increasing awareness of the theoretical potential for neurotoxicity of even low levels of organomercurials and because of the increased number of thimerosal containing vaccines that had been added to the infant immunization schedule, concerns about the use of thimerosal in vaccines and other products have been raised.

The best cure is prevention

Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. The virus spreads through respiratory droplets in a cough or sneeze, and people start spreading the virus a day before they develop symptoms. You can also pick it up by touching something that has flu virus on it, then touching your mouth or nose.   In addition it surely can’t hurt to begin to increase your bodies immune system function.  You can do this quite effectively naturally, without the use of drugs or untested vaccines.

It is believed that there will be 50million doses of the H1N1 vaccines available by the end of August and another 150million available sometime around the end of September. This leaves some 150million Americans “unprotected” against the virus.

The question here? Is this a blessing or a curse?

The bottom line is that this vaccine, which is being produced by 5 American companies, is being prepared for mass injection into infants, children, teens and adults has not been tested. The fact is that it will not be tested before the injections begin. This makes those receiving the injections the test subjects or ginnie pigs. Although this practice is uncommon to the American heal care system it is a normal practice in Europe where The European Medicines Agency is allowing companies to skip the testing process entirely. Even more interesting is that when the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. announced a swine flu vaccine trial beginning in early August, it was inundated with phone calls and emails from people desperate to play the role of human guinea pigs. Truly Amazing!

Especially alarming is that there is no safety data available on the use of adjuvants on infants and pregnant women who are particularly susceptible to the N1H1 virus. An immunological adjuvant is an agent in the serum intended to stimulate the immune system and increase the response to a vaccine. In addition, as it was recently unveiled by the Washington Post, many doses of the new H1N1 vaccine will be stored in multi dose vials which will contain thimerosal (mercury in its most common form used as a preservative). Due to the use of thimerosal in vaccines given to kids during the 1976 swine flu scare, the number of cases of autism has increased by 1500 percent since 1991. This number corresponds to the period of time during which the number of vaccines for kids also increased. While in 1991 there was one kid diagnosed with autism for every 2500, today there are 166 kids diagnosed for the same 2500. These numbers as well as public pressure to stop using mercury in vaccines, has made forced some companies to allegedly reduce the amounts of thimerosal used in their products. This is not the case however in the new batches of the H1N1 vaccine.

I probably don’t need to remind you that in 1976, a failed swine flu vaccine caused irreparable damage to the nervous systems of hundreds of people, paralyzing many. Medical doctors gave the problem a name, of course, to make it sound like they knew what they were talking about: Guillain-Barre syndrome. (Notably, they never called it “Toxic Vaccine Syndrome” because that would be too informative.)

But the fact remains that doctors never knew how the vaccines caused these severe problems, and if the same event played out today, all the doctors and vaccine pushers would undoubtedly deny any link between the vaccines and paralysis altogether.

Conclusion:

There is a great deal that we don’t know about this vaccine in terms of the potential health hazards it may pose to those subjected to it. What we do know however, that the adjuvants have not been tested on infants and pregnant women, that mercury is being used in the serum as a preservative and that it has bee proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that mercury is directly linked to autism.

It is also note worthy that influenza spreads around the world in seasonal epidemics, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands annually — millions in pandemic years. Three influenza pandemics occurred in the 20th century and killed tens of millions of people, with each of these pandemics being caused by the appearance of a new strain of the virus in humans. Often, these new strains appear when an existing flu virus spreads to humans from other animal species, or when an existing human strain picks up new genes from a virus that usually infects birds or pigs. An avian strain named H5N1 raised the concern of a new influenza pandemic, after it emerged in Asia in the 1990s, but it has not evolved to a form that spreads easily between people.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported yesterday (8/1/09) a total of 183,826 confirmed cases with 1,301 deaths from 167 countries. Two new countries reported to have been infected were Channel Island and Moldova. Please believe me when I say that I am not trying to understate the potential for a major health crisis here nor am I trivializing the single death of any individual.  What I am saying however is that based on statistics alone this H1N1 “Pandemic” is a blip on the radar when compared to the hundreds of thousands of influenza death’s that occur every year, yet it is being touted as some kind of black plague.

We at Heal Products Guru stand by our position that the H1N1 flu vaccine should be avoided at all costs. We also stand strongly in our advocacy of natural immune system optimization. Of the 266 known swine flu deaths in the US 6% of the deaths (15) were pregnant women.  Pregnant women who get infected with the flu are at increased risk of serious illness and hospitalization.  In fact, the second H1N1 flu death in the United States was a pregnant woman. Because of this greater risk, pregnant women are advised to get annual flu vaccinations. On the other hand, pregnant women also are advised to be very cautious when taking any medications—especially the newest ones—because of unknown health risks to the developing fetus. What’s more, many folks remember the 1976 swine flu vaccination fiasco, when some 500 Americans out of the 43 million vaccinated developed a rare paralyzing condition called Guillain-Barré syndrome that may have been linked to the shot.  Just today, public health experts said that there’s no way to know if any rare side effects will occur in the new vaccine until millions of people are vaccinated. Those unknowns would make an expectant mom especially nervous.

Pregnant women have long been known to be at increased risk for adverse effects from seasonal influenza, and health authorities recommend every year that all pregnant women be vaccinated.  The vaccine protects not only the mother but also her baby. A study conducted in Bangladesh and reported in the New England Journal of Medicine last year found that vaccination for seasonal flu reduced flu in infants by 63%.  Even so, only about an estimated 15% receive the shots. The women are thought to be at risk of developing pneumonia — and dying – because of changes to their lungs and immune system that are a normal part of pregnancy, and many physicians fear that the risk is even higher with H1N1. In fact, British and Swiss health authorities have notoriously argued that women should postpone getting pregnant until after the pandemic has passed.

Pregnant women who want to avoid the compound, however, may need to search a bit to find a doctor who stocks thimerosal-free versions of both flu vaccines. Most gynecologists don’t bother because the CDC doesn’t say there’s any need for pregnant women to avoid thimerosal.  John Iskander, the previous head of immunization safety at the CDC, told me last fall that the reason the agency doesn’t recommend thimerosal-free vaccines is because “there’s still not enough women receiving the flu vaccine, and we don’t want to throw up another barrier in the vaccination process.” Most likely, the CDC will recommend that pregnant women get both vaccines this fall, but the agency hasn’t yet finalized its recommendations for at-risk groups (including mothers-to-be).

For the purposes of this discussion the enzymes we will be considering when planning our diet will be the ones found in the third category.  Enzyme research has revealed the importance of raw foods in the diet. The enzymes in raw food help start the process of digestion and reduce the body’s need to produce digestive enzymes.  Why raw foods?  When food is heated, wet heat such as boiling (118 degrees Fahrenheit) dry heat such as baking or broiling (about 150 degrees), the enzymes are destroyed and no longer function as an aid in the digestion process.

A diet composed exclusively of cooked food puts a severe strain on the pancreas, drawing down its reserves, so to speak.  If the pancreas is constantly over stimulated to produce enzymes that ought to be in foods, the result over time will be inhibited function. Humans eating an enzyme-poor diet, comprised primarily of cooked food, use up a tremendous amount of their enzyme potential in the outpouring of secretions from the pancreas and other digestive organs.  Studies have shown that a lack of digestive enzymes in our diet’s cause shortened life span, illness and lowered resistance to stress.  These studies also shows that both humans and animals on diets comprised of mostly of cooked food have enlarged pancreatic organs while other organs, notably the brain, actually shrink in size.

Naturally one would think; “ok, all I need to do is start eating raw fruits and vegetables and problem solved”.  Wrong!  First of all many raw vegetables are difficult for the body to digest.  The cruciferous vegetables, for example, (Broccoli, Brussels Sprout, Cabbage, Collard Greens, Kale, Horseradish, Rutabaga, Turnip, Chinese Cabbage, Cauliflower, Broccoli Rabe, Daikon, Bok Choy, Radish, Spinach) although packed with , vitamins, and minerals they are also noted for their high cellulose content.  Most mammals do not have the ability to break it down and absorb nutrients from it easily, including humans (1). Cruciferous vegetables also contain oxalic acid, which is mildly irritating to the body. Humans have to excrete the acid through urine and feces.

Other vegetables such as those in the legumes, tubers and squashes are equally as difficult to digest in their raw state due to their high cellulose content.

Is there a light at the end of this tunnel?  There is, albeit a dim one.

Leafy green vegetables such as , Loose Leaf, Romaine, Red Leaf, Green Leaf, Iceberg (Crisphead), Summer Crisp, Butterhead (Boston or Bibb), Cos, Imperial, Lollo Ross, and Round lettuce. Endive.  are the most ideal vegetable that humans can consume.  Digestively, we are well suited to eating leafy greens, and they do not cause the digestive problems brought on by the cellulose and starch in many other vegetables. They are low in calories and high in nutrients and minerals. They contain a small amount of fatty acids in a state suitable for use by the body.  At least a head of lettuce or other leafy greens should be eaten daily. This will only make up a small percentage of your calories (around 100 calories for a head), but a decent amount of your food mass, and provide you with numerous nutrients that your body cannot do without.

Raw diets that overemphasize these greens will likely fail because not enough calories will be taken in, and the diet would be unsustainable over time. Equally, a totally fruitarian diet with no greens will also likely fail without the important nutrients in greens.   Leafy greens combine well with all fruits and vegetables with the possible exception of melons for some people.

Vegetables that are really non-sweet fruits (Bell Peppers (Green, Red, Yellow, Orange, etc), Tomatoes, Cucumbers)  While these are technically fruit, they are considered vegetables for all intents and purposes. Without the high cellulose and starch content of many other vegetables, but with plenty of water and a great nutrient mix, they are ideal vegetables along with leafy greens.  They should be eaten regularly, and are excellent additions to salads. The only exception to this is green peppers. Green peppers are merely bell peppers which have not ripened yet and so should be avoided like all other unripened fruit. They mix well with all fruits and vegetables with the possible exception of melons for some people.

Celery is an excellent food that digests well with almost anything else. It contains the necessary mineral sodium, which is present in a ratio that can be easily accessed by the body. Sodium is critical, along with the mineral potassium, in managing the body’s electrolyte balance.  Electrolytes create electric osmotic pressure which helps the body to move fluids through the cell’s membranes. It can be eaten with any other fruit or vegetable.

Now I’m sure that many of you have thought at one time or another while reading this; “I can juice the veggies that are high in starch and cellulose, problem solved”.  Wrong Again!

Although is it not my policy to infuse politics into this site I believe there are a few crucial health issues of great importance and that are  at the very least note worthy.  I’d like to preface what I am about to say by stating that I have no political axe to grind nor do I carry any banners for either of the two major political parties.  I have been a registered Independent since I became of voting age some 33 years ago and vote for the person not along party lines.  What you are about to read is the unbiased truth

Having said that I want take a little time here to discuss the pending health care reform legislation that has stalled in Washington.  As you already know I believe that the best offence is a strong defense and that, now more than ever, it is critical to be proactive when it comes to our health as well as the health of our families.

All we need to do is to look at the other industrial nations around the world, such as Canada, the UK and France to name a few, to see that the last place you want to find yourselves is within a socialist medical system.  In my opinion the horror stories that have come to light in recent months are merely the tip of the iceberg and that we truly do not have a clue as to how bad these systems are in terms of delivering timely quality health care.  I don’t care what your political affiliation is or what your political belief’s are you do not want to be at the mercy of  government run health care.

At this point I must beg your indulgence and ask you to keep an open mind as I attempt to explain why this shift is taking place within our country at this time.  I’m sure that you have heard the term “New World Order” (NOW) before.  In our recent history you have heard the term used by more than a few of our nations leaders including both of the Bushes and President Obama.   Within the NOW, that our leadership are attempting to steer us towards, are two other organizations namely the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the World Health Organization (WHO).  As a member nation of both the UN and WHO we are subject to their rules and regulations.  Now within this structure is yet another organization called The Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) whose purpose is to set food standards and guidelines.  By virtue of our countries status as a member nation of the WHO we are subject to these standards and guidelines world wide.  Further more, with regard to international trade, the CAC regulations take precedence over the FDA.

What does all of this mean to us in terms of health care?  Simply stated when our elected officials sold out  this nation by joining the WHO and subsequently signed onto the NAFTA and GAT agreements they also gave away our sovereignty in terms of our health care options relative to natural foods and remedies.  The evidence of this plan to regulate natural foods and supplements (such as vitamins and mineral supplements) can be seen in the UK where a ban on hundreds of nutritional supplements (vitamins, minerals, herbs and almino-acids)  has been in place since 2005.  In the UK you must actually visit a doctor to get a prescription for vitamin E, C or D to name a few.  You can not purchase herbal supplements or botanical remedies without a prescription in the UK.  Those of you that think this could never happen in the US, think again!

Just recently the US Food & Drug Administration forced the General Mills Corporation to change the package of their breakfast cereal Cheeros because it claimed to help lower cholesterol and by doing so was, by law, considered to be a drug.  That’s right, “a drug”.  You see if a product claims to or is thought to be claiming to  either diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease it is considered to be a drug by the FDA.  When Cheeros advertised that it was “heart healthy’ and “lowered cholesterol” it was claiming it could treat a disease and subsequently violated FDA regulations.  The choice they were given was to either change the packaging or take the product off of the shelves and make available by prescription only.

The truth is that this is really nothing new in the USA.  Whistle blowers have been telling us about the conspiracy against the natural supplementation industry by the FDA and Big Pharma for decades but no one listened.

Again, what does this mean to us in terms of health care?  Let’s look at the BIG Picture here.  The government is trying to move us towards a socialized government run medical system the likes of which have failed miserably in every nation in which it has been implemented.  If passed the government will have total control of our medical industry.  The US government by means of the FDA and the WHO by means of the FAO and the CAC are taking control of the nutritional supplement industry.  If they gain total control of this industry in the US you will need to get a prescription for natural supplements which leads us back to the now government controlled medical industry.  Do you see what is happening here?

This has nothing to do with health care ladies and gentlemen.  It has to do with politics.  It has to do with control.  To those of you who do not believe what has been written here I challenge you to prove any of this content to be in error.  To those of you who can see the potential for the loss of our right and ability to choose the way we maintain our personal health and that of our loved ones I say this.  Again, be proactive!  Do all that you can to optimize your health.  Avoid the necessity of entering the healthcare system at all costs.  Lastly call your congressmen and senators and tell them that you are against the health care reform proposal as it stands.

Ladies and gentlemen I am the first to say that we need health care reform in this country (USA).  I also say however that there has to be a better way to accomplish this.  Government controlled health care is not the answer!

This simplistic yet sound advice is more applicable today than ever before.  It has been reported that thousands of  people in America alone have been infected with the H1N1 (Swine Flu) Virus.  There is however a greater danger lurking in the darkness that is receiving very little press.

According to the National Institutes of Health, over the past forty years, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA – “flesh eating” Pneumonia)) has changed from a usually controllable nuisance into a serious public health problem.  It is believed that the over use of antibiotics has caused this mutation and subsequently created an antibiotic-resistant bacteria.  In a paper published in the June (09) addition of The Lancet Infectious Diseases a type pf pneumonia is discussed that has proved fatal in 75% of reported cases.  At first, it was primarily one of the most common hospital-acquired infections. But in recent years, new strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, often dubbed “super bugs”, have popped up in communities and caused severe, even life-threatening infections in otherwise healthy people, involving the skin, heart, blood or bones.  The weakening of the immune system by the H1N1 virus has made people particularly susceptible to the CA-MRSA virus.  Since CA-MRSA  is a community acquired virus it is best to avoid hospitals at all costs if you have been effected by the H1N1 virus or any other malady that may have weakened your immune system.

Doctors at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta write in The Lancet Infectious Diseases article that CA-MRSA has become well known for causing skin and soft-tissue infections that are transmitted by person-to-person contact or contact with contaminated objects. However, now there are increasing cases of CA-MRSA caused pneumonia that kills lung tissue. And those becoming sick with the disease aren’t necessarily the old and/or physically weak. In fact, according to the report from the Emory team led by Alicia Hidron, MD, an infectious diseases fellow and Henry Blumberg, MD, professor of medicine and epidemiology at Emory, CA-MRSA pneumonia appears to most commonly affect young and previously healthy patients.

Dr. Hidron and Dr. Blumberg also noted in their paper that, besides causing a high fever, CA-MRSA pneumonia can sometimes cause low blood pressure that progresses to septic shock and requires patients to be placed on mechanical respirators in order to breathe. Another important point discussed in the article may turn out to have special relevance due to the emergence of H1N1 influenza, especially by the time flu season rolls around this fall: potentially deadly CA-MRSA pneumonia appears to occur most commonly following a flu-type illness.

Serious MRSA disease can strike anyone, regardless of age, health or where they live. Outbreaks have occurred among young athletes who play contact sports and among people living in close quarters, such as nursing homes, military facilities, nursing homes, and childcare centers.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases advises using these precautions to help prevent CA-MRSA infections:

Practice good hygiene.
Keep cuts and scrapes clean and bandage until healed.
Avoid contact with other people’s wounds or bandages.
Don’t share soiled or used personal items, such as towels, washcloths, razors, or clothes.
Use hot water and bleach to wash soiled sheets, towels and clothes.

“Officials say that they are confident a vaccine will work, and that a campaign will go ahead, with vaccine production and clinical trials occurring at the same time”.
The first doses—as many as 100 million—would likely be ready by mid-October. As Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius reports they are anticipating a voluntary fall vaccination program.  Government officials note that researchers report “the new H1N1 influenza virus as bearing a disturbing resemblance to the virus strain that caused the 1918 flu pandemic, with a greater ability to infect the lungs than common seasonal flu viruses”

Why should this be of concern to you?

No one knows what treatment will be effective in combating the H1N1 flu.  What we do know however is that no flu vaccination has ever been proved to be effective in fighting any viral infection.  There is absolutely no evidence that flu shots actually work. The flu shot is only able to protect against certain strains of the flu, so if you come into contact with a strain that you are not protected from, then you will still get the flu. This is in fact not uncommon. In 2004, The National Vaccine Information Center reported that the vaccine given that year did not contain the flu strain that caused the majority of flu outbreaks that year. A study published in the Lancet in August revealed that there was no correlation between the flu shot and reduced risk of pneumonia. Further, a large study of 260,000 children between 23 month and 6 discovered that the flu vaccine is no more effective that a placebo. This was reported in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews.

The flu vaccines contain antibiotics such as neomycin, polymyxin B and gentamicin which are added to eliminate stray bacteria found in the mixture. Evidence shows that antibiotics wipe out beneficial bacteria that is needed for optimum health. Antibiotics ironically lower the immune system and cause Candida overgrowth.

Vaccines contain Polysorbate 80 as an emulsifier. This highly toxic agent can seriously lower the immune system and cause anaphylactic shock which can kill. According to the MSDS sheet at Science lab.com, section 11, polysorbate 80 may cause reproductive effects, cancer, and may be a mutagenic, (change the genetics), in animals. According to PubMed.Gov, neonatal rats that were injected with small doses of polysorbate 80 had serious damage to their reproductive organs, often resulting in infertility. Imagine that they are recommending this for young girls! It’s no wonder that the infertility rate is skyrocketing each and every year.

There is growing evidence that flu shots cause Alzheimer’s disease due to the aluminum and formaldehyde combined with mercury since they are even more toxic together than they are alone. Some research suggests that people who received the flu vaccine each year for 3 to 5 years had 10 times greater chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease than people who did not have any flu shots.

With so many potential side effects, it seems clear that the flu shot is potentially dangerous while not making a difference anyway. In addition, it is also completely unnecessary. Everything that we need to enjoy amazing health is right here on planet earth. Nothing man made is ever, ever needed in order to ward off illness and live vibrantly.

Here are a few things that you can do to help prevent illness that are far healthier than getting a flu vaccination.

Exercise, exercise, exercise! When you get out and get your body moving, you are much less likely to get sick. Yoga, for example is a fabulous way to get fit, relieve stress and boost the immune system.

Eat plenty of immune boosting foods such as garlic, vitamin C containing fruits and fresh green juices (broccoli, cabbage, cucumber and celery.) A diet rich in live foods is a sure way to stay healthy all year long.

Cut out sugar. Sugar suppresses the immune system and causes disease. Today there are so many wonderful healthy alternatives such as agave nectar and xylitol that it is totally unnecessary to ever consume sugar.

Deal with emotional stress. Anger and stress suppress the immune system. Yoga, meditation, counselling, natural therapies and plant medicines can transform stress and help you live with abundant health in mind and body.

Get plenty of sleep. A lack of sleep suppresses the immune system, but is a reality for millions of people. Find ways to make life less hectic so that you have more time to catch those zzzzs.

The swine flu will probably return in force earlier than seasonal flu usually begins, federal health officials predicted Friday, saying they expected it to erupt as soon as schools open rather than in October or November.

The swine flu is still circulating in the United States, especially in summer camps, even though hot weather has arrived and the regular flu season ended months ago, “so we expect challenges when people return to school, when kids are congregating together,” Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of respiratory diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in a telephone news conference held jointly with vaccine experts from the Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services.

It is still unclear how many doses of a swine flu vaccine will be available by then, and officials have been reluctant to make firm predictions beyond saying that they expect tens of millions, rather than hundreds of millions, and they plan to triage them to people who are the most vulnerable, like pregnant women and people who are the most likely to encounter the flu, like health care workers.

The number of doses available will depend on how fast seed strains grow, how much protection a small dose provides, and whether immune-system boosters called adjuvants are needed and prove to be safe; adjuvants are not used in American flu vaccines now.

Clinical trials testing those questions are expected to take another couple of months, said Dr. Jesse L. Goodman, director of the F.D.A.’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research.

Assuming a swine flu vaccination campaign begins, it will be voluntary, Dr. Schuchat emphasized, but she “strongly encouraged” pregnant women to get both a seasonal flu shot and a swine flu shot when they are available.

The C.D.C. has been closely following the disease in the Southern Hemisphere winter, and it is mimicking the patterns seen in the United States and Mexico in the spring, she said.

Most infections and most serious cases are in children and young adults, and those with underlying conditions, including pregnancy, are the most likely to die. Dr. Schuchat likened the spread’s unpredictability to that of popcorn: one city could see an explosion of cases and overwhelmed hospitals while another saw few.

Her most important message, she added, was that “the virus isn’t gone, and we fully expect there will be challenges in the fall.”
